Could This Vestige Explain Modern Conservatism?
There’s been lots of discussion already about how conservatives today have a tendency to support progressive ideas when something personally affects them. Such as coming around on gay rights after someone in their family comes out. Or people supporting Universal Healthcare when they get sick and personally experience the failings of a for-profit system.
What if it goes deeper than that? When a dog is put on a leash, it does not have the ability to conceptualize it is now connected to something else. It will get tangled up around pretty much anything without any idea why its movement keeps getting more and more restricted. Always in the now, reacting to what’s around them without any idea how their actions may impact others, or even themselves, in the future.
What conservatives may be dealing with is a more developed vestige of a similar primitive holdover. A simple lack of understanding connectivity and how their actions — or lack of actions — impact society as a whole, including themselves.
