5 Taboo Things That Need To Change For Greater Gender Equality

When people think about the fight for gender equality they usually think of the more obvious things, curbing sexual violence, electing female leaders, reproductive & LGBT rights, etc. However, there are less obvious — yet more taboo- ways to bring about the greater respect between men, women, and anyone in-between.

Here are five examples:

1) Move Beyond Gendered Language

Something that is perhaps the least controversial of the bunch but still raises ire amount traditionalists. How we speak plays a significant role in inequality whether we want to admit it or not.

When we talk of gendered language we typically refer to things like pronouns, which can be useful when things regarding sex are relevant. Though more often than not it is not and if we are to build a society where there is real equality in the sexes we should be looking for language that unifies people rather than keeps them separate. Some countries, like Sweden, are already doing this with great results.

Let’s also remember the very word we have for adult female, woman, is a compound of “womb” and “man.” We literally refer to one sex by their…
